Azurite and Aquamarine Necklace

One of the most interesting stones I have ever made into a necklace. It is like a miniature landscape of a mountain and a valley.

Last minute shopping on the go… Good friend and customer wanted a gift so I brought the store to him on the tailgate of our truck in the parking lot of the mall. Honestly, I have done this a lot. I live in ‘Nowheresville’ so I have often brought the store to the customer especially this time of year. I gift wrapped it and everything for him. No different the mall, right? Talk about low overhead. (Well, I guess pickup trucks are not the cheap these days.)

Cookie Fest 2014

Every year we decorate cookies with the Aunties… The guys don’t really decorate much they just eat and goof off. Notice the ‘mice’ they were really easy and fun to make. Chocolate covered cherry with the stem as the the tail, white striped Herseys kiss face, almond slice ears, on an oreo cookie. If you google Chocolate Cherry Mice the recipe comes right up…. very simple. I am not really a fan of dessert, lucky thing, I would rather eat a steak or drink a cold beer than waste the calorie on a cookie.

Clay Mathews Christmas Cookie made by Gabrielle ~ for all of you Green Bay Packers Fans ~ The frosting on this one will put anyone over the edge… Blood sugar 1500….

This is Aunt Jenny and Aunt Margo, cousin Gabrielle, the awesome neighbor kid Autumn and Savannah my daughter making, making, making….cookies and a mess.

This is the only way my husband lets his picture be taken. This is an exact replica of my husband Bill. (Ok, he doesn’t wear shirts like that… his shirts are mostly black and have a Harley Davidson something on them ~ and we forgot the boots.)

C-Fest 2014 (cookie fest) painted on the snowbank while the guys play football, dog plays too. After the cookies are made we head to the Rockin K Ranch in Greenleaf, Wisconsin. This ranch gives sleigh rides (or wagon rides if there is not enough snow) and drops you off in the woods at a bonfire ~every family has their own bonfire in the woods, privately. They pick you up whenever you say so ~ hour or two. We bring popcorn, hot chocolate and some family trivia the kids make up. It’s really fun and a nice way to spend the evening together being festive and getting in the spirit. The Rockin K Ranch does it right. Thanks for another fun night at your farm. If you have little kids or a company party it’s a really fun time doing something simple and little old fashion.

Merry Christmas Everyone!

I hope you have a peaceful Christmas with friends and family and are happily looking forward to 2015.

Finalized piece from my last post…  The trillion cut stones I could have never set without Gerry Lewy’s stone setting class. Thanks Gerry. I am sure Gerry, sitting up in Toronto Canada, has no idea I use his teachings almost daily. He will be teaching at Peninsula School of Art in Fish Creek Door Co. next summer. If you can possibly take the class ~ take it… It’s amazing. Now I need to learn bright setting and engraving from him. If only I could live longer. http://www.peninsulaschoolofart.com

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas!!!!!!!!!!!

Below are pics of custom orders I made though out this season…. Above is a blue spinel, diamond, ruby 18K Gold Ring/Sterling Custom Order

IMG_2015

Roman Glass Ring 14K Gold from clients own melted down jewelry…..

IMG_1846

This piece is Roman Glass as well… 15 diamonds, opal, and garnet from clients own jewelry… I could not have made this piece without my diamond setting class. I would never have tackled it. Set all the stones with out any problems or headaches… thanks again Gerry Lewy.

IMG_1937

Sentimental Choker (necklace top) sent to me via a CustomMade website customer. CustomMade.com is a really neat arts website for custom orders on almost anything. Check it out if you have never heard of it. This customer wanted this necklace re-created in sterling silver. It meant a lot to her and she became allergic to it. The clasp was her own… which I did not have from her.

IMG_1936

IMG_1944

This is the necklace completed… handmade chain. Center piece was 10G sterling if you can imagine that! Very heavy.

IMG_1983

Birthstone necklace pretty simple…The A and E charms though were the customers own white gold engagement ring… the first one he bought his wife. It was sitting in her jewelry box as he upgraded her setting 7 years ago. Well I cut it in half, melted it down and made these two white gold charms from his wifes original engagement ring setting: initials of their children’s names. Hope she loves it. The birthstone pendant is husbands own design. What a thoughtful guy!

IMG_2026

‘Get Sagged Trying,’ Surgical Hardware Necklace… this is not done yet… I have to get it to it’s owner for a race on Jan 4th… She obviously had troubles in her last race but is ready to run again wearing this as a reminder. Surgical hardware is fun to work with as it is ‘unwreckable’ I swear! It doesn’t do anything in a torch flame at all. Nothing hurts it. I am assuming it is titanium but I am not sure.

Well, here’s to next year! Have a wonderful Christmas everyone.

Class Wrap Up & New Things

DSC_0053

I am still amazed from class. The rings above are examples of what I did in class. You could say, ‘No big deal,’ pretty standard issue jewelry…but… The princess cut ~ hardest stone to set without breaking a corner off. I did it in less than a half an hour without sweating it and made perfect little places for the corners and the pavilion. The round setting… hmmm… never use a setting bur! What! Never use a setting bur, never. It’s a set up for failure and complications. I did not use one. It went perfectly in less than 15 minutes. The channel setting: less than 25 minutes: unreal for me and it’s solid as a rock, every stone. Thanks Gerry.

DSC_0055

This is practice I have left to do. The top ring I am holding is a ‘flush’ or ‘gypsy’ set ring. I did the first two stones with caution. I went and talked to my instructor, Gerry. Perfect. Not going anywhere. I could not believe it. I actually can’t wait to set the rest of them. It was such a pleasure. How can I tell you how to do it? I can’t. You have to see him. It’s a second by second decision of troubleshooting before you get into trouble and remove too much metal and make a mistake. Big thing is stop using your burs. They are deceiving you. I thought when I went into this class I would be taking exact measurements with a digital calipers. NEVER USED THEM ONE TIME! NEVER MEASURED ANYTHING NOT EVEN ONCE. Could not believe it. The settings left over are a cluster setting: bottom right… I have done those before and they are pretty easy. The other settings are heavy bezel settings and they are easier than the gypsy setting but pretty similar in technique. I just worked on what I knew was a challenge for me and these others I know I can do easily ~ Especially now.

IMG_1633 IMG_1632

Very crude picture of Gerry’s Guiness Book of World Record Poker Chip. I got to hold it! It is a replica in plated sterling silver. He does not travel with the real thing. 17, one carat diamonds travel around the outside rim of the poker chip. The 8 is circled by pink diamonds. 22 K Pink Gold and valued at $450,000. It was fun to hold the replica. He is actually going to fill the space in by the #7 and #8 with pave set diamonds as well… must be nice to be a casino! Wow.

Made this today. It was fun. Made another zillion things today. Freezing outside. What else is there to do? Necklace reminds me of Summer! Where did it go?

How come it took me so long to put this feather sideways! I like it even better this way.

This was fun as well and little crazier. The chain attachment that you can barely see in this picture is interesting. Never seen it before myself but I am sure it exists as there are no original ideas, especially in jewelry making. The chain is attached with double pieces of tubing on a sliding piece of silver.

This is my good friend Lissa from Silver Waves Jewelry. We are out at a local Mexican Restaurant called El Sarpe. She sang beautifully in Spanish with the waitress…. What a fun night after class – many of the class students came and Gerry our instructor as well. Some of my own family members showed up too, kids and all. We had a huge table. Great food as always.

I have 50 more pictures to show you including the making of a hollow cube. I will save it until next time. See you soon in Depere Nov. 30th at East Depere High School.

Diamond Setting Class & 18K Gold Earrings

Made these earrings on a whim because I love these little pearls! I decided to go a little higher end with them. 18K Gold and Sterling Silver.

Taking a diamond setting class for three days. It’s Mind Blowing… not kidding. Amazing. Gerry Lewy has been setting stones for 54 years. I learned two really important tricks with his first sentence out of his mouth. Besides being a master stone setter he has a great sense of humor! Love it and I’m off to class now.

Coral Fossil Stone Necklace

I just made this for tomorrows show. It’s a really interesting, organic piece. I did not have a vision for this coral fossil but it just came together as my hands worked. I had no plan.

I’m taking a class Nov 1, 2, 3 in Green Bay Wisconsin at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College. The class is with Gerry Lewy a Master Diamond Setter from Toronto Canada. It is on diamond setting, of course. He just recently made the world’s most expensive poker chip. Wow! Diamond encrusted, amazing. If you can take this class please send me your email and I will get you the information. The class number is not available yet but it will be soon. The class will cost approximately $500 which includes a kit of tools and supplies that cost $285. It’s worth traveling to take the class. There is no home Green Bay Packers Game that weekend so getting a hotel room should be easy and reasonably priced. Again let me know if you are interested: email: joy@joykruse.com

Not yet done… working on this men’s custom order hinged bracelet. It’s massive and heavy. He is going to love it. It’s not finished but almost.

DSC_2932

This is pencil lead. It was tip to me from another metalsmith. It does not burn and holds small parts like tubing in place for soldering. Thanks metalsmith person of unknown origin – can’t remember who taught me that!

IMG_1247

On a personal note decided to run the Fox Cities Half Marathon. Don’t cry for me. I am use to this. It’s my favorite distance and run it often, 13.1 miles, is like heaven for me. I have run 7 full marathons. On the 6th one I said, ‘Never again.’ I ran another one with a good friend and had a blast. Now, hmmm…. should I run an 8th one??? What do you think??? It would be in May sometime around the 20th. I love running in the winter so I am giving this serious consideration. A marathon though is something that is a great undertaking. It is not the race itself. It’s the training. You have to put in the time, the miles, like stacking bales of hay in the barn. In summer you stack the mow full then in winter you hope you have enough, taking them out one by one when you need them. Every mile is a bale of hay. On race day you start throwing them down out of the haymow ~ Are you going to have enough? Are you going to run short? Or do you have plenty left over? There is no faking it.

Last but not least I have been try to make more post earrings. It has been a frequent request. These are 10mm Freshwater Pearls, sterling silver, hinged post earrings. The swirl with the pearl swings back and forth. Nice movement, Classic style but a little different.

Last but not least Art Show in Fish Creek Door County September 28th 10-5. It’s only one day at the Settlement Shops right before you head into Fish Creek. Stop and say Hi if you can. It is a beautiful time of year to be in Door County. The best time of year as the fall colors will be changing then. Hope to see you soon at class or at a show!
