On The News Tomorrow

Tune in tomorrow to Channel 5 at their live 9:20am spot…. I guess it will be me…. which is a little scary that it is live. (You can witness me being my dorky self.) The live spot is for ArtStreet which takes place in downtown Green Bay. There is art, entertainment & food all weekend long: Friday 4-8pm, Sat 10-8pm, Sun 10-4pm. I am booth #147 which is on the corner of Cherry St. next to Associated Bank. I am right by the food & beer if that is any motivation. The next few pics wrap up summer. It has been a good one…

I made a series of 10 of these necklaces… It is Manganese Dendrite on Limestone. These stones were mined in a famous mine in Germany years ago name Solenhofen. Link to this necklace: http://www.wildprairiesilver.com/store/p377/Manganese_Dendrite_Citrine_Gemstone_Necklace_.html    I will have others listed next week. If you want a pic of each one just send me an email and I will send you some pics. email joy@joykruse.com

This was a custom order for a lady based on another one I made that was much larger. The follow picture is of how it arrived at her house.

postalbox

Hmmm… ran over it ??????? This box is stuffed tight with tissue paper… inside the tissue paper is another hard jewelry box that is gift wrapped… inside that box is another bunch of tissue paper and your jewelry. The pendant in photo above was bent at a 45 degree angle ~ seriously, it’s layers of 20G metal… The customer was wonderful about it. I am making her a new pendant and filing my insurance claim with the post office. I have never had this happen before. I did go to the post office with my photos… I just needed some kind of a explanation. They said a conveyor must have eaten it…. well… then send it back me.. really… look at the box.. jeez. You can leave that at someones door step and think it’s ok? Saga over… Making another one. It was a pleasure to do, so third times a charm.

One of my favorite pieces of all summer… Ocean Jasper, Tourmaline and White Topaz…sold

This is Crazy Lace Agate and Diamond. This necklace is at The Flying Pig Gallery. It is a beauty. The pics do not do it justice. The top of the stone is a drusy and I could not seem to get that to sparkle. Lake Michigan Beach Stone Souvenir Necklace… Sold… Huge piece of sterling silver rod going right through stone… embedded Garnet… heavy, hammer, forged, handmade sterling chain. I never had so much fun 🙂 really, it was really really really really fun to make this necklace.

We got a dog. He’s great. We needed a dog. The kids needed a dog. His name is Dusty. He came from a shelter in Alabama to the shelter here in Green Bay. (I think he is german Shepard and heeler?) He has been a delight for this past week. He is silly. He does not seem to have ever been out of a caged environment. He eats frogs and bees. He has learned a lot in the last week we have had him… like not to walk through a glass door. He has learned to almost trust us and relax and be a dog.

IMG_6161

Kids life ~ Dogs life ~ good stuff, they have no idea how loved they are… and won’t for years and years…

IMG_5365

Diamond Accented Cross sent to Germany. Was a favorite for me… even the guy it was going to was just wonderful. I hope he is wearing it as I type this ~ It was the saying he wanted and I really loved it… ‘Being Myself… Being Confident’ – ‘Happiness & Wonders All Around…’

IMG_5583

Lake Michigan ~ Cave Point State Park a favorite place Summer or Winter

IMG_5579

Yeah, they buried her entirely. This is our neighbor girl. She’s fun and sweet and easy to smile… Summer could not be any better when you are twelve.

See you tomorrow on the News at 9:20 WFRV Channel 5 and at ArtStreet all weekend long #147….

Summer Is Almost Over…Enjoy…

Artstreet Location….

ArtStreet… I will be in the same spot as last year… #143. I love it when they do that because I am easy to find. I am on the corner of Adams and Cherry right at the Art Raffle Tent. See ArtStreet Event link: http://www.mosaicartsinc.org/artstreet/index.php

Artstreet Artist Map 2014

I am cross eyed already from making, making, making but it will all be worth it after the weekend is over (unless it rains like crazy…) I am looking forward to seeing good friends, neighbors, other artists. Katie is helping me pull everything together today and we will probably call it an early day as if you make things in a rush it just does not work out.

Classes at Peninsula School of Art are a go! So I will be teaching “How To Launch An Etsy Shop” and “Telling A Story In Stone’ which is a traditional metalsmithing class. They are both the week of Sept 15th Monday-Friday. If you can go — go! Taking a workshop is always inspiring. Let me know if you need class info or check with PeninsulaSchoolofArt.org.

Earlier this week my family and I traveled to my Dads home in Florida where his wife Terry still lives. (My Dad passed away this spring.) She is moving soon and we went to help her pack and just visit before she moves. It was good to see her and my Dad’s Chocolate Lab, Hank… He eats everything he shouldn’t — like, shoes, toilet paper, boxes, belts, phones… He is only one year old so he is then energizer bunny and weighs 100 lbs. His tail is his smile and could almost knock you down-great to see them both. During our time there we went to Blue Springs State Park in Deland Florida. We had been there before and you can swim/snorkle in a natural spring that flows out into the ocean. It is a manatee refuge. It is like snorkeling in an aquarium. We were told that we would not see any manatees because it’s the wrong time of year. The last time we went we swam with a family of manatees and it was surreal to swim with adults and their babies in the wild.

Well…. my daughter and I were just snorkeling along and a huge shadow cruised beneath us! It was a single manatee and he/she was just gorgeous and huge… about the size of a cow. We slowly swam with he or she for several minutes and even carassed him – he feels like a prickly leather couch–like a wild boar with course hair, tough exterior… Great experience again to be completely in the wild and have a chance encounter with an endangered species – or protected species, not sure which. I chuckled at all the little kids getting on the airplane with their Micky Mouse hats from Disney World… I bet they did not have the amazing time we had — for almost free.

Below picture is 10 feet deep water: half fresh water and half salt… crystal clear to the bottom.

IMG_3712

People in floats, swimming and snorkeling the spring down to the mouth. My son sat on the bottom and saw a 6 foot Gar fish swim over him.

IMG_3714

We also visited the tallest light house in Florida built in late 1800’s. Great history behind this light house still in use, on the end of the strip in Daytona Beach Florida which is called Ponce Inlet. 1.5 million bricks, 8 feet thick walls at the bottom, 208 steps that men carried up gallons of kerosene by hand daily… has with stood a few hurricanes… The light in the lighthouse is now computerized and has an electric light but it use to be a kerosene lamp with a wick (imagine the wick-huge???) with a zillion magnifying lens surrounding it make the light bigger and brighter… That lamp is shown in the second photo. It was huge, made from brass and massive amounts of one inch or more  thick pieces of glass — I’m a museum junky — neat stuff. (I am such a geek, sorry about that.) Three men and their families maned the light house 24/7 for years on end. It took constant maintenance and care.

IMG_3696

This is the lens/lamp — it’s about 2 stories tall.

IMG_3700

Could not walk far enough out into the ocean to get a picture of the entire lighthouse – ocean is behind me and in front of me too  🙂

IMG_3698

New necklaces just finished today…. Both with hand made chains…both agates,  my favorites… The last necklace with amethysts as accents.

IMG_3752 IMG_3751

IMG_3780 IMG_3775

If you are interested in either one of these necklace please send me an email at joykruse@yahoo.com

I won’t have time to post them online before the show starts tomorrow at 4pm. I hope to see you there and hope it doesn’t rain a lot this weekend. Heck of a way to make a living in the rain, outside, with beautiful hand made things… amen to all artists out there doing outdoor shows. It’s an adventure every time. See you soon. Maybe tomorrow? and wish me luck.

Been working hard at my bench for ArtStreet. I have more pieces that these but won’t get the pics up before the show. Please visit: http://www.joykruse.etsy.com to see individual listings.

I’ve also had some family things going on that have needed my attention in far away places so it’s been a whirl wind of a month. ArtStreet always marks the last week of summer and that is hard to believe. I don’t want to believe it. I guess if I lived in an ‘endless summer’ I would tire of it….

Summer Pics, New Things, ArtStreet… soon….

DSC_0132

This is an old old old post office building near my home. It is on my neighbors property and it’s an interesting place… Once in a while in go here to take pictures. This time my daughter went with her metal detector. We didn’t find much as far as metal goes but it was fun and the it’s the thought that counts! It was an adventure.

DSC_0150

Our big find… Some old square nails and I do love to use these in my work so it was a successful hunt.

DSC_0175

Rhodocrosite Toggle Necklace… This pink stone is a favorite of mine along with Agua Nueva and Laguna Agate. It’s getting really hard to find nice stones though. Link: https://www.etsy.com/listing/199563146/rhodocrosite-sterling-silver-necklace?

Took a short trip to Waupaca Wisconsin and stayed on Spencer Lake at The Dragonfly Cottage. Here is the link to the cottage if you want to visit and stay… it was amazing: http://www.vrbo.com/396062

The water is obviously crystal clear and we learned to Kayak which I had never done and I thought I would not like it and I love it!!!!!!!!!!!! On the flip side we learned to mountain bike a beginner trail… I thought I would love it… I hated every minute of it and thought I was going to die smashing my head open on a rock. So, you never know until you try I guess. If you are a mountain biker my hat is off to you…wow, hard. Try out Hartman Creek State Park trails. They made them for mountain bikers and I am diffidently not cut out for the sport.

IMG_3661

This is about the average size fish we caught. Hee Hee… not such great fishing.

Beautiful simple necklace made today… Roni if you are out there this would be a good one for you 🙂

My Grandmother… she came for a day to the cottage and went on a boat ride. I thought she was a goner this spring so it’s nice to see her enjoy summer time with some strength. She will be 91 in a month. She spent the entire day on a pontoon, amazing.

IMG_3491

Our church was featured in this magazine which is pretty neat! I was shocked to see it as I read! I looked at the pictures and could not believe my eyes. What a surprise. Our church makes ‘Booyah’ which is similar to chicken soup and it’s a popular northern Wisconsin tradition.

Winter is coming….start stacking. Before winter arrives though is ArtStreet in downtown Green Bay Wisconsin. It starts on Friday night Aug 22nd. When I know where my booth will be I will post it next week. They did not have an artist map for me yet. See you there I hope!

Great Stones! Great Fun!

DSC_0002

This is a repair job… The earring with the green stone and garnet (garnet is almost black in the picture) was purchased by a customer of mine in Poland by an artist. She lost the other earring. I told the customer I had a very similar sized Mexican Fire Opal and could possible make her an earring that would NOT match but be a great alternative to not wearing her sentimental earring. Here is the repair…. The earring with the yellow stone I made to ‘not match’ her other earring. I hope she loves them and how different they are. You would be surprised to know that people often never notice if you are wearing two different earrings. Your face is just enough space for their brain to not pick up the difference. This being said most customers are very picky about their earrings being perfect matches while they examine them before they purchase them. I always grin to myself because slight difference will never be noticed… you can get away with wearing an entirely different pair all together.

White Topaz Engagement Ring: https://www.etsy.com/listing/180070791/engagement-ring-sterling-silver-white?

This I have listed as an alternative engagement ring. It can be any kind of ring however and I will probably make it with some other stones including a diamond. I love the ring. It’s comfortable, durable and looks like a classic on the hand.

DSC_0051

This is an usual setting. It’s a rose cut white topaz and is set in a domed setting. I would really like to thank Gerry Lewy for coming to Green Bay for his diamond setting class. I have grown leaps and bounds in my ability to set stones because of him. Thank you Gerry!

Lake Michigan ‘In All Of Her Glory” inspired necklace… Crazy Lace Agate and Iolite Rosecut Gemstones. Lake Michigan looks like a dangerous, icy ocean right now. We are experiencing the coldest winter here in 35 years and some of the Great Lakes you can walk out on to for miles. This does not happen very often so take advantage of the ice caves they won’t be back maybe in my lifetime. Link: https://www.etsy.com/listing/180275264/sterling-silver-crazy-lace-agate?ref=listing-shop-header-1

DSC_0088

This is a bubble chalcedony stone. It’s a very feminine coral pink which is a favorite color of mine. It’s small enough for Roni…. but probably not her style. (Love ya Roni!!!! Small enough for Roni is going to be my new baseline for stones of this size.) I could not resist the interesting texture of this stone. Link: https://www.etsy.com/listing/180164000/chalcedony-specimen-stone-sterling?ref=listing-shop-header-3

DSC_0102

Last but not least is this Landscape Jasper…. doesn’t it look like the desert… It is so perfect. I was going to mess with it in an elaborate setting and I just could not do it. The stone is really all there is. I couldn’t make it any better than it is by itself. Link: https://www.etsy.com/listing/180274620/sterling-silver-landscape-jasper?ref=listing-shop-header-2

I had two friends that went to Tucson and purchased stones for me. Thank you. What a Godsend. You have no idea how badly I would like to go there and I will get there someday. Thank you though to my friends that shopped for me! Awesome stuff that I will post next time.

I have a show in about two weeks. I am looking forward to it. Green Bay’s Artigras at Shopko Hall, March 8, 9th. It’s a nice break in the winter to get out and see friendly faces. Stop in if you can and say hi.

Upcoming Diamond Setting Class Info

FinalGemstone Flyer     Please open this PDF to view Diamond Setting Class to be offered by Gerry Lewy Master Diamond Setter. It will be held in Green Bay WI at NWTC (Northeast Wisconsin Technical College) on Nov 8, 9, 10th. The class is half full right now. So, please sign up soon if you are planning on attending. There is a home Packer game that weekend so hotel rooms will be a challenge. I cannot wait to take this class. I am sure I won’t get the opportunity ever again to learn such specifically detailed skills so if you are considering it….do it.

Coral Fossil Stone Necklace

I just made this for tomorrows show. It’s a really interesting, organic piece. I did not have a vision for this coral fossil but it just came together as my hands worked. I had no plan.

How often do you get to see one of these? He hitched a ride on my daughter’s leg while bike riding. A Praying Mantis…cool eyes, weird.

DSC_0018

This is a commissioned piece for Trout Unlimited. Every year I make a piece of jewelry for their fundraiser. This year is a special year for them. The National Convention and Fundraiser is being held here (Green Bay) and it never has been here before. The local chapter is very excited to host the National Meeting and that is how this dog tag has come to be made.

It’s a very heavy, manly piece of jewelry. I hope it is well received at the Convention.

On a side note: Thank you Aaron Rodgers and Mason Crosby. I will never really get to thank you in a way you actually know about it but thank you. My son’s 7th grade football team had a game in Green Bay this week. These are 12 year old kids, not high school kids and Aaron Rogers as well as Mason Crosby were in the stands watching their game. That really got the kids fired up. They probably will be talking about that until they are 80 years old, whittling in rocking chairs on their front porches. No one approached them which was nice but it sure did not go unnoticed and those kids will never forget it.

Artstreet…Why Do Art Shows? Pros Cons

IMG_0220

Well, this is me. I don’t post my pic that often and for good reason. I don’t really like my picture on the internent constantly. That being said, Hello!

Artstreet was great. It opened for the first time on Friday night to artists. I was wondering how it would go because people are not use to it being that way and there was a home Green Bay Packers Football game. It was better than good. It was great! People were in a completely different mode. They were dressed for dinner and a date, very kicked back and casual…drinking a glass of wine. I had half of my sales from 5-8pm on Friday night. I find that is pretty normal at most art shows. Your best sales are the first day. The people that really want to see you are planning on being there when the show opens.

The atmosphere at night was not ‘busy’.  No strollers and slushies…No Baking Sun…No Loud Music…. Romantic and quiet, Nice. Thanks ArtStreet for the Friday night.

Swinging Hinged Earrings…. 3 inches long… Sterling Silver

These are very fun to make! Tiny hinges on the bottom of the square make them swing while the hammered circle swings as well…great movement in these handmade earrings.

Link: https://www.etsy.com/listing/160907636/swinging-hinged-sterling-silver-post

IMG_0269

Copper Bangles are almost gone. In the dead of winter I will make more. They take a lot of muscle to maneuver them. I made some of them hinge and ‘latch’…They worked just perfectly and they all sold. I also made some tie in a knot. That was really difficult to do but worth the effect. Those are all gone as well.

So, why do art shows? They are really physically hard. You are basically setting up an entire store for a day or two and then taking it down. You are setting it up often outside which is risky! If you have bad weather the show is pretty much a loss. Hmmm, well, for me I meet new people that become customers for life. They come back at Christmas time via the interment and call on the phone for a special order. It’s the only way to really connect with people and make friendships and customers and have the interaction you need for a lasting relationship. I have a customer in Oconto, WI named Dawn. I met her at ArtStreet maybe four years ago. I look forward to seeing her every year. If I did not see her there I would think something was wrong. She mails me stuff of hers to repair/restyle and mails me custom orders to make for her. I don’t think she would do this if she did not meet me and trust me. If you are not good with people or     do not like people and  are reclusive shows are probably not for you. Let someone else do the selling like a gallery or online sales.

Art shows (if the weather is good) also bring in a large amount of sales in one/two days. This helps the pocket book and allows you to stay in business, make new things, buy more material and see customers faces wearing things that you made. I just love that! I love seeing someone smile when they put on a piece of jewelry I made. I hope they smile like that every time they wear it.

You have to crunch the numbers though. If your shows are not profitable change something… Your shows not being successful can be a zillion things on an endless list. Sometimes a show can just not be a good show for no reason at all and the next year be fine. So don’t beat yourself up but look at your product, your booth, your price points and be objective. Look at what successful merchants do. How did they get so famous and have sales? How do they market their product? How can I do that in a small way or hey, a big way! Go for it. Todd Reed is a pretty famous jeweler and designer. He sells his raw diamond rings at Neiman Marcus. Guess how he got in there? He just never stopped calling. Guess how he got in to a bunch of trade magazines….He never stopped calling, marketing, pushing, photos, etc…. It did not happen because he was sitting at home thinking ‘My stuff is awesome. Why doesn’t anyone call me?’

You have to have a plan. You have to have a goal. You have to write down. You have to change it up.

Make new goals every year. Make them specific for one year, five years, ten years, and into retirement. WRITE THEM DOWN. CHANGE THEM EVERY YEAR. REWRITE THEM (every year!)

Hammered Sticks from my jewelry supply shop… These make great links for all kinds of things.

Link: https://www.etsy.com/listing/121264023/sterling-silver-hammered-stick-finding

Bad weather at show can be very BAD! Leave the show. You cannot risk damage to not only your things but someone else’s things if your tent decides to become a parachute and land on a stained glass artists booth. My good friend Tammy Rae left ArtStreet with several others because their street was in a wind tunnel and peoples things were crashing to the ground. Good choice….leave. I went to find her on Sunday and the street she was on was only half full of artists. The other half of them left due to wind. I was on the street 3 years in a row without problems so it was a fluke with wind gusts. I told her to do ArtStreet so I hope she returns next year. It was SUPER Hot on Sunday pushing 100 degrees. Sunday afternoon was pretty slow and that is to be expected in that kind of heat.

My daughter Savannah, great help and great fun. Thanks for hanging in there for three days straight and my helper KT-Thanks Katie!!!! And of course my husband and son who help set up and take down when it’s cooking hot. I could not do what I do without them. Thanks! The day following ArtStreet we left at 7am and went to Wisconsin Dells, Noah’s Ark… Largest waterpark in the country. It was a nice treat from the heat and a last blast before school starts. The Big Kahuna Wave Pool can’t beat it.

Pic of Artstreet

This was the first time ArtStreet has been open to artist on Friday night. It was busy! Wow! Thank you everyone. I’m already looking pretty low on inventory so Sunday will be slim pickens, but that’s why we’re there! Great!

20130824-055302.jpg
I will probably have to work in my studio tonight to make some special requests for people…little things they will pick up on Sunday. No fancy dinner with friends after show, shucks.

Bummer…Is Summer Over? Last Big Show

DSC_2793

Summer is sure seeming to be coming to a close. I love this time of year but it’s hard to see Summer go… Last big show of the year, ArtStreet, Green Bay WI kinda of marks Summer’s end. After that kids go back to school and the leaves start to fall to the ground. The inevitable ‘White Death’ will be to follow (Winter.)

All of the pics are of things I made for the show. They are not posted on Etsy for sale. If you would like to purchase one of them let me know and I will post it for you on Friday morning.

DSC_2784

This stone bracelet is a first. I have never made a bracelet with a stone set in it. The stone setting is curved and fits perfectly so the stone does not swing around to the underside of your wrist. The chain is completely handmade. I even rolled out the wire from a poured ingot. It’s a beautiful heavy, sturdy piece of jewelry, like a bracelet needs to be.

The Skull Ring…. I like skulls. I will probably always use skulls in my work. This ring is huge. Picture does not do it justice. The stone was carved just for me and I have a few of them.

That’s it…. See you this weekend #162 corner of Cherry and Adams St. I will take some great pics of the event and the booth. It starts tomorrow at 5pm which is really weird for me not to get up at 4am to set up for a show. Looking forward to it… always great to see good friends.
